We are looking for a purpose-led individual keen to help support and shape our future plans, joining us during a time that will certainly be looked back on as the most crucial in our development as we move forward with our ambitious £11.5M expansion plan.

The role of Chair is a key appointment for Hearts Together and will require an experienced Chair/Trustee who is motivated by our purpose and who has a passion for supporting future growth. The Chair will have a keen interest in shaping future plans, and be able to horizon scan and effectively mobilise new opportunities with an understanding of the strategic, legislative and political environments that affect and influence our work. The Chair will also act as an ambassador for the charity and help to build constructive alliances, taking an active role in engagement with key stakeholders.

The responsibility of the Chair is to lead the Board of Trustees ensuring that the board fulfils its functions in providing a strategy and effective governance for the charity. The Chair will support the Chief Executive and ensure that the Board works closely with the management team to achieve agreed objectives, enabling Hearts Together to fulfil its purpose, and ensuring maximum impact for our beneficiaries.

Above all, we are looking for a Chair who will be an inspirational ambassador and advocate at all levels for Hearts Together

Time commitment: In addition to quarterly board meetings the Chair is also expected to have regular meetings with the Chief Executive, and also represent the Charity at various events and meetings with key stakeholders.
Remuneration: The role of the Chair is not accompanied by any financial remuneration, although expenses for travel may be claimed.
Insurance: The Chair of the Board of Trustees is covered by the charity's Indemnity Insurance.
Terms: The Chair (and board members) are appointed for a three-year term with eligibility for reappointment. The candidate should not have any interest which may conflict with his/her ability to perform fully the role of Chair.

Young Volunteers and The Duke of Edinburgh's Award Volunteers

We welcome Young Volunteers who are either completing the Volunteering section of their Duke of Edinburgh's award or completing placement hours for other programs such as with The Princes Trust, or those who just want to help out and gain some valuable work Experience!
Housekeeping Volunteer

Our home from home accommodation sees around 10,000 patients, carers and relatives staying with us each year and we are open 365 days a year. This means there are a lot of beds to change! We have a busy team of housekeepers but an extra pair of hands to make the odd bed or two is always greatly appreciated!
Handyperson Volunteer

We are on the lookout for a general handyperson! As a busy hotel we often have several maintenance jobs that need doing throughout the year. These types of jobs include things such as unblocking sinks / fixing leaking sinks, putting up shelves, painting/decorating, changing light bulbs, fixing toilet flushes, putting up curtains, or fixing door handles. It can often be difficult to find tradespeople willing to do such minor jobs, that’s where volunteers can step in to help.
Gardening Volunteer

We are fortunate to have a large garden area which those of you who are a more green-fingered would be very welcome to help enhance and tend. Our garden is highly valued by our guests, offering peace and tranquillity during what can be very difficult times.
Student Volunteer Counsellors

We are looking for student counsellors to join our team alongside our qualified counsellors to help us to provide an informal counselling support service for our guests staying at Hearts Together Hospital Hotel. This service is so important in enabling us to provide much-needed support to those who are often preoccupied with supporting others, or who are dealing with complex or life-changing issues themselves.

The generosity of fundraisers and charity supporters enables us to provide thousands of patients, carers & relatives with a home away from home and invaluable support, when they or a loved one are receiving medical care or treatment
Our plans to expand

Our big build project sees Hearts Together set to expand from 26 bedrooms to 73 over two build phases, an ambitious but very necessary challenge that we intend to meet head on, as we look to accommodate the ever-growing needs of patients, carers, relatives, our local community, healthcare professionals and trainees.

he thought of creating a Hospital Hotel which would support patients receiving treatment at Derriford was the dream Monica Pearce first suggested back in 1993, following her successful campaign for the Cardiac unit to be brought to Derriford in 1994.
